Latham was African American and suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Family called 911 after he started a fight over a bag of potato chips. When police arrived he brandished a butcher knife. At trial, police said Latham was making threats and movements with the knife and took one small step toward an officer, who shot and killed Latham. The officer was acquitted.
