Police arrived at a boarding house for migrant farm workers to find Torrez standing over his badly beaten brother with a knife. Torrez refused commands to drop the knife and police opened fire, killing Torrez. Some witnesses alleged Torrez was not armed and his family sued Fresno. The lawsuit was dismissed.
