Acosta had mental health issues, a drug problem, a criminal record, and a protective order to stay away from his wife. She happened to be a civilian employee of the Fresno PD. While trying to apprehend him police used pepper spray and a Taser, neither of which worked. When he threatened officers with a four-foot metal post, he was shot to death.
