Local police tried to pull over the Chevy pickup truck driven by Rawls for a traffic violation, but Rawls refused. Instead he began a brief pursuit through early-evening Flint. He lost control, struck a tree, and died. His license had been suspended seven times; he was the fifth police chase fatality in the county for the year.
