Starr County police responded to the area of FM 2098 near Falcon Lake around 1:30 a.m. in reference to a shooting involving a border patrol agent as he attempted to apprehend a drug smuggler. According to border patrol Chief Kevin Oaks, his agents had apprehended four subjects and were searching for a fifth one when the unnamed agent was met with gunshots. The officer then returned fire ending the suspected smuggler's life. Eight hundred pounds of narcotics were seized during the encounter.
