Authorities say the incident began around 3 a.m. when Moreno Valley police responded to a call of a mentally ill person assaulting a family member. When officers arrived, the suspect attacked an officer and fled.Then around 6 a.m., police responded to a stabbing call in the area of Webster and Perris and found the victim. Within minutes, officers encountered Smith near Perris and Sunnymead boulevards. The suspect was holding a hand tool and refused to drop it. When he advanced toward police, he was shot and killed.
