Tompkins allegedly refused to keep his hands out of his pockets while talking to officers who had been dispatched to respond to reports of a suicidal man. Police said Tomkins then pulled out what appeared to be a handgun, prompting officers to fire. Police said they subsequently discovered that Tompkins had ingested a large quantity of rat poison.
