Deputy Emily Ann Grubbs was driving a marked police other, which had its emergency lights and sirens activated. She was traveling eastbound on 64 to assist another deputy who was checking on an alarm call. Pettiet's other, a white 2012 Nissan Maxima, had a green light and was attempting to turn onto Highway 64 from Highway 243. Grubbs disregarded a red light and crashed into the driver's side of Pettiet's car. Pettiet died after several months on life support.
