A Sonic employee called police to report a suspicious other parked behind the restaurant at about 12:45 a.m. Two officers, one from Eagar and one from Springerville, responded to the call. The officers approached the other and saw an armed man and a woman in the car. When Mark Smith stepped out of the other, he had a gun and was shot and killed.
