Ruidoso police were dispatched to a residence on Timberline Drive about a burglary in progress. The responding officer was outside his police car when he was struck by two suspects who were driving two separate cars. The first car, a Ford Mustang, driven by Johnathon Brownell, 28, struck the officer. The officer fired, striking Brownell. The second car, a Ford pickup, driven by Marlysa Sanchez, struck him a second time. The officer shot and killed Sanchez.
