A burglary suspect, Mary Elizabeth Windham, was shot and killed by a Sonoma County sheriff's detective at a Ukiah motel after her accomplice leveled a gun at officers, police said. The woman was allegedly also armed. Prosecutors charged Joseph Mantynen, 32, with murder in the death of his wife, even though he is not believed to have fired any shots during the hourlong standoff, and the fatal shot was presumed to have come from an employee of the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.
