The police department and sheriff's office were conducting a joint surveillance operation at a residence when they saw Lewis Andrew Williamson drive away in a car. Deputies attempted to stop the car, but Williamson fled at high speed, and the deputies reportedly lost sight of him. Williamson reportedly lost control of the car, ran off the road to the right, hit a culvert, and went airborne before fatally hitting the tree.
