About 7:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a domestic disturbance at a home where they had visited many times in the past for similar incidents. Two officers encountered Gary McKinney armed with a knife in one hand and a ligature around his mother's neck in the other hand. The officers ordered McKinney to drop the knife and let his mother go, but he refused. One officer shot and killed McKinney.
