Deadly force
After 6 p.m., deputies got a call about three men in a black BMW approaching people, asking them where they are from and showing a firearm. Deputies found the other in Salazar Park. Three sheriff's vehicles with six personnel total were involved in the stop. The sheriff said the driver of the BMW, Rene Herrera, got out and opened fire, wounding two deputies. Two deputies fired a total of 19 rounds at Herrera, killing him. Fernando Cruz remained in the backseat of the BMW. A deputy saw him brandishing a silver object. Believing Cruz to be armed, the deputy shot and killed him. The object was a flashlight.
This record exists so that Fernando Cruz, and all who are named in this archive, are never reduced to a number.
