According to family members Patrick Bryant was walking to the store with his girlfriend's young son to get a cigarette. According to witnesses, Bryant attempted to break into two homes with the youngster standing lookout. Bryant was a security guard and was armed with a handgun. Police responded to reports of a prowler and encountered Bryant outside a home. Police said Bryant brandished a handgun at them so an officer shot and killed him.
