Police received a call around 10 a.m. from a family member of a distraught man, who was armed and threatening suicide. Officers were dispatched to the man's home. Within minutes of their arrival, officers located Billy G. Heeter in the home. Police confronted him, and he allegedly produced a gun, and Officer Kenneth Bowers shot and killed him.
