During a welfare check, Jackie Scott Pendergrass allegedly fired a shot at deputies as they approached the house. Deputies reportedly retreated and tried to communicate with Pendergrass, but he opened fire on them a short time later. During an exchange of gunfire, a deputy was shot. Pendergrass was killed. Autopsy results showed Pendergrass had shot himself with a .45 handgun..
