At 4:45 a.m., a Poteau police officer and LeFlore County Sheriff's deputy were dispatched to a 911 call at the E-Z Mart where a man, Jaquan Derrick Diijon Thompson, was reported to be holding a clerk at knifepoint. When police arrived, Thompson was ordered to release the clerk and drop the knife, but he refused. Each of the officers fired a shot at Thompson who was killed.
