South Carolina Highway Patrol set up a license checkpoint. El Asia Hassian Muhammad was traveling east on Wells Highway did not stop at the checkpoint, and a patrolman pursued. The other went through an intersection and then crashed into the basement of a residence, killing Vanessa Neimeyer, who was in bed at the time. Muhammad was charged with a variety of crimes.
