About 4:30 p.m., officers were called to a Safeway for a report of a man with a hatchet, breaking into a car. When police confronted Lane Martin, they reported that they first fired non-lethal rounds, causing him to drop his hatchet and flee on foot. Officer Gary Doran then shot and killed Martin upon following him through the Ash Street Courtyard Apartments. Police said that Martin had a knife on him. According to police reports, one officer said Martin had a knife in his hand and walked one or two steps toward the officers. Tests showed 1.2 milligrams of methamphetamine and 0.12 milligrams of amphetamine in Martin's blood.
