Daniel Abel had led federal police with the Bureau of Indian Affairs on an earlier pursuit in Nevada after they received calls of a pickup driving erratically and nearly causing several crashes. The Idaho State Police were notified, and a trooper eventually caught up with the pickup and reportedly saw it driving dangerously. Abel was able to get away from the trooper until he lost control and rolled the pickup down an embankment, killing him. A passenger was injured.
