According to the Vanderburgh County Health Department, Dean Alexander Smith Jr., 25, was killed by a clinical sickle cell crisis, cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) and multiple drug intoxication from cocaine and alcohol. Smith died after a short foot pursuit with police.
