Around 9 p.m., a Fort Lauderdale police officer was driving southbound on North Powerline Road. As he proceeded through the green traffic signal at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, pedestrian Francisco Valdez-Villacres crossed the northbound lanes on North Powerline Road and continued across the southbound lanes along the south side of the intersection. The officer struck and killed Valdez.
