Around 5:15 p.m. a National Park ranger saw a Ford F-250 truck driving erratically. The other was stopped, and the driver, Charles Gage Lorentz, reportedly got out and was confronted by the ranger, who shot and killed him. Later reporting suggested Lorentz and Ranger Robert Mitchell struggled over Mitchell's weapon after a traffic stop escalated inexplicably.
