Valencia County Sheriff's Office received a call from a woman just before 11 a.m. who reported being shot by a man who turned out to be Richard Romero. Romero fled in an SUV and was spotted on I-40 by state police. A chase ensued and came to an end when Romero drove over spike strips and officers used a PIT maneuver causing the SUV to crash into a cable barrier in the median. Romero brandished a rifle in the car and a Laguna Tribal Police officer shot him with a bean bag round to no effect. Romero shot at the officers, and one officer returned fire, killing Romero.
