Around 11:30 p.m., deputies responded to a domestic incident. Deputies attempted to pull over a other. Deputies made contact with Joseph Howell and reportedly tried to negotiate with him. However, he fired two shots at deputies and a brief pursuit began. Deputies used their vehicles to disable Howell's. Shots were exchanged, and deputies shot and killed Howell.
