James Matalice Smith barricaded himself inside a home after shooting Deputy John Pollock. Pollock was shot while trying to serve a warrant at that home. Around 3 a.m., Smith was coming out of his home, with police believing he was surrendering. As officers attempted to take him into custody Smith fired a gun at the trooper, hitting him in the arm. Police shot and killed Smith.
