At about 5 p.m., Anaheim police spotted Brandon Lopez, an armed-robbery suspect, driving a reportedly stolen car in Santa Ana. Police pursued with the assistance of a police chopper, but officers reportedly pulled back. A little while later, Lopez's car was spotted disabled in a construction, with the suspect holed up inside. Police spent four hours unsuccessfully trying to convince Lopez to surrender. A little before 10 p.m., police deployed tear gas to force the suspect out of the car, police said. After he exited the car, officers shot and killed him. Police withheld details about why officers killed him, or whether he was armed or returned fire.
