At 8:51 p.m., a woman called police saying that Gilbert Lee Collison Jr. had broken into a home. She said Collison was armed with a shotgun and had made threats to shoot police if they attempted to enter the home. The caller also said that Gilbert Collison was currently wanted by police. The woman called police after receiving a call from Collison saying that he came back into her home. Around 2:30 a.m., Collison stood in the front doorway of the home and confronted police with a shotgun. A less-lethal impact baton fired by an officer struck Collison in the leg. Collison fired on the officers. Three officers shot and killed Collison.
