Yara Mohammad al-Kawlak, aged 9, was tragically killed in an Israeli airstrike on May 16, 2021, during the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Palestinian armed groups in Gaza. She was one of 11 children receiving trauma counselling from the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) who lost their lives while sheltering in their homes.

Yara and her family were among several victims of an airstrike on Al Wahda Street in central Gaza City, which targeted residential buildings and civilian infrastructure. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 13 members of the extended al-Kawlak family, including Yara's younger sister Rula, aged 5, and several other relatives. The family home was reduced to rubble, and many of the victims were children as young as six months old.
