Hamza Abdul Rahman Murtaja was a Palestinian journalist and photographer, best known for his work with Record Media, a privately owned production company in Gaza. He was the brother of Yasser Murtaja, a journalist killed by an Israeli sniper in 2018 during the "Great Return March" protests.

On August 20, 2024, Hamza was killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted the Mustafa Hafez School in western Gaza City, where displaced individuals had taken shelter. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people, including Hamza.

As a camera operator, he worked closely with international news outlets such as Reuters, Channel 4, Anadolu Agency, Al Jazeera, and others. Hamza was documenting the conditions of displaced people at the time of his death.

His death drew widespread condemnation, especially from UNESCO, which highlighted the growing number of journalists and media workers killed in the region.

A plea from the family

Following the tragic death of journalist Hamza Abdul Rahman Murtaja on August 20, 2024, his surviving family members expressed profound grief and loss. Hamza was the father of two young children: Omar, who was 4 years old at the time of his death, and Yaser, who was 6 months old, born during the Israel-Gaza conflict and named after Hamza's late brother, Yasser Murtaja. Tragically, Hamza never had the chance to meet his son Yaser before his untimely death.
