
Abolfazl Amirataei (2006–2023) was a 16-year-old Iranian high school student from Shahr-e Rey, who sustained critical injuries after being shot in the head during the 2022 Mahsa Amini protests. He remained in a coma for months before passing away on May 26, 2023.
Abolfazl Amirataei was born on January 4, 2006, and lived in Shahr-e Rey, Iran. A high school student in Varamin specializing in industrial electricity, Abolfazl was known for his bright spirit, love for languages, football, and video games. He had a special fondness for animals, especially dogs, and was remembered as a cheerful and sociable young boy.
On September 21, 2022, amid the nationwide Mahsa Amini protests, Abolfazl was severely injured when security forces shot him in the head at close range with a tear gas canister. He lost a significant portion of his skull and fell into a coma, undergoing several surgeries in Haft-e Tir Hospital, Tehran. His family reportedly faced pressure from Iranian authorities to avoid filing legal complaints in exchange for medical treatment.
After several months in intensive care, he was moved home but continued to suffer complications. Although he briefly showed signs of regaining consciousness in May 2023, Abolfazl passed away on May 26, after enduring eight months of critical condition. His death became another symbol of the brutality faced by Iranian youth during the protests, drawing condemnation from human rights organizations and amplifying calls for justice and reform in Iran.
