Raghad Ashour

Raghad Hussein Ashour was a 17-year-old Palestinian student whose life was shaped by the challenges of living through the war in Gaza. Originally from Beit Hanoun, she was forced to flee her home with her mother and seek refuge in central Gaza as military operations and displacement affected communities across the territory. During the conflict, Raghad suffered the loss of her father, who was reportedly killed in a previous Israeli attack, leaving her and her mother to face the hardships of war together.

Despite displacement, personal loss, and the widespread destruction of educational infrastructure in Gaza, Raghad remained dedicated to continuing her studies. She was preparing for her 11th-grade high school examinations and was determined to pursue her education under extremely difficult circumstances. On the morning of 22 June 2026, while traveling to take one of her exams, she was killed in an Israeli strike in the al-Rimal district of Gaza City. Her death drew attention because it occurred while she was engaged in an ordinary educational activity amid extraordinary conditions of conflict and displacement.

Raghad's story has been cited by supporters and commentators as reflecting the experiences of many Palestinian students whose education and daily lives have been disrupted by war. Having lost her father, been displaced from her hometown, and ultimately killed while on her way to an examination, her life illustrates the profound impact that the conflict has had on young people and their families in Gaza.
