Biography
Amirhesam Khodayarifard was a 22-year-old Iranian citizen from the city of Kuhdasht in Lorestan Province. He belonged to the Yarsan religious community. During nationwide protests sparked by severe economic decline and currency collapse in late 2025, he joined public demonstrations in his city. On December 31, 2025, he was shot by Iranian security forces and later died from his injuries. His death became controversial after state media attempted to portray him as a member of the Basij, a claim rejected by human rights organizations and eyewitnesses.
Amirhesam Khodayarifard, born in approximately 2003, lived in Kuhdasht, a city in western Iran’s Lorestan Province. He was a follower of the Yarsan faith, a minority religious group that has historically faced discrimination in Iran. Like many young Iranians, Amirhesam was affected by rising inflation, currency collapse, and worsening living conditions.
In late December 2025, widespread protests erupted across Iran after the Iranian rial reached record lows. Amirhesam participated in demonstrations in Kuhdasht on December 31, 2025. During these protests, Iranian security forces confronted demonstrators using force. Amirhesam was shot at close range and later transferred to a medical facility in Khorramabad. He died several hours later due to the severity of his injuries.
After his death, Iranian state institutions and media outlets attempted to label him as a Basij member killed by protesters. Hengaw and eyewitnesses reported that this narrative was false and that authorities pressured his family to publicly accept the Basij claim in exchange for receiving his body and permission to hold funeral ceremonies.

The father of Amir-Hessam Khodayarifard, a young protester killed in the city of Kuhdasht in Iran’s Lorestan province, said at his son’s funeral that Amir-Hessam was not a member of the Basij militia.
