Their life

Mohammad Nouri was a 17-year-old Iranian teenager from the city of Qom who was killed during the nationwide anti-government protests in early January 2026. He was fatally shot by Iranian security forces while participating in demonstrations at Towhid Square, amid a violent crackdown on protesters demanding economic relief and political change. His death became one of the documented cases highlighting the lethal use of live ammunition against civilians during the 2025–2026 Iranian protests.

Mohammad Nouri was born and raised in Qom, Iran, and was 17 years old at the time of his death. Like many young Iranians, he lived through a period marked by severe economic hardship, rising inflation, and growing public dissatisfaction with government policies. In late December 2025 and early January 2026, widespread protests erupted across Iran, drawing large numbers of students and young people into the streets.

On 2 January 2026, Mohammad joined demonstrations in Towhid Square in Qom. During the protest, Iranian security forces reportedly opened fire on demonstrators using live ammunition. Mohammad was shot from behind and sustained a critical gunshot wound. His friends contacted his family, and at his mother’s insistence he was transferred while unconscious to a nearby medical clinic. Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries.

Following his death, Mohammad’s family reported being subjected to pressure by authorities to describe him as affiliated with the Basij militia or to conduct a quiet burial without public notification. His funeral was ultimately held on 4 January 2026 under restrictive conditions, without a public ceremony. His killing has been cited by rights groups and media outlets as part of a broader pattern of lethal force used against protesters during the crackdown.

How they died

He was shot directly and killed during an assault by security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran on protesters in Towhid Square in the city.

Mohammad Nouri died from a gunshot wound to the lung after being shot by Iranian security forces during a protest in Towhid Square. Reports indicate that live ammunition was used against demonstrators. He was critically injured, lost consciousness, and later died at a medical clinic due to the severity of internal injuries caused by the bullet.

A plea from the family

Mohammad Nouri’s family stated that they were pressured by authorities after his death to label him as affiliated with the Basij militia or to conduct his funeral quietly without informing the public. These pressures were reportedly aimed at preventing public mourning and suppressing attention to the circumstances of his killing. The family’s accounts reflect broader concerns raised by relatives of other protest victims regarding intimidation and restrictions on funerals.
